First American Edition from the fourth London Edition. Boston: Printed by and for Belknap and Hall, 1793. 324 pages plus two-page table of contents in the rear. Cover in full leather, 4 ¼” x 6 ½”. Staining to top of first few pages including frontispiece portraits of Della Crusca and Anna Matilda. Remainder of pages relatively clean wiuth a small stain here and there. Cracking to front hinge. “Social Library” written on one of the front endpapers. Condition overall very good for an 18 th century imprint. The British Album was one of the first publications to bring before the public the writings of a group of English authors living in Florence and styling themselves the Della Cruscans. Della Crusca has been identified as the poet Robert Merry (1755 - 1798). For the most part, the Della Cruscan poets received scathing reviews. Walter Scott called them "a set of coxcombs who have humbugged the world long enough," while Hazlitt and Macaulay thought them to be less than dilettantes.
