Description

From Wikipedia on the Art Journal, which began as a journal based in London only: "The Art Journal was the most important British 19th-century magazine on art. It was founded in 1839 by Hodgson & Graves, print publishers, 6 Pall Mall, with the title Art Union Monthly Journal (or The Art Union), the first issue of 750 copies appearing 15 February 1839. It was published in London but its readership was global in reach..." From an archive on The Art Journal: "D. Appleton and Co. began The Art Journal in 1875 as an American edition of the older London-based Art Journal. It included original content as well as content from the London journal. The journal was taken over by Patterson and Neilson around 1881, and ceased publication in 1887." I HAVE FOUR VOLUMES OF THE AMERICAN ART JOURNAL FROM 1881 TO 1884. All are described similarly: They are fully restored in their original FULL LEATHER GLORY!! The leather is dark brown towards black. Blind-stamped borders on front and rear boards, UNRUBBED GILT TITLES AND DECORATION on front board and spine. Five raised bands on the spine. Gilt lined board edges, and gilt decoration on the leather borders behind the front and rear boards. Light edge and corner wear on the boards. TREATED LEATHER results in a supple look and feel. Moire endpapers, gilt page edges on the three edges. Moire endpapers, THICK PAPER PLATES THROUGHOUT. I have provided the List of Illustraitons page for each of the volumes. Each volume was 350-400 pages. They measure 13" by 10" and weigh 8 lbs 14 oz. THIS LISTING IS FOR THE 1884 VOLUME. It is the only one of the 4 volumes which has a color chromolithograph. This purchase is for a third party, a keen collector, as a surprise. I sent this vendor, lorber588, an email to confirm the product details before purchasing. They responded within the day, confirming the facts, and they answered every question in detail and I really appreciate that candor. The item arrived just an hour ago in the exact description as advertised and in pristine condition. I'm very pleased, and I'll be adding this vendor onto my favorites list for future purchases. Thank you!
