TERRELL FAMILY Publication: 1860-1880 Description: A leatherbound Carte de Visite album with metal clasp belonging to "Mrs. Sue F. Terrell, Golansville, Virginia". The album is full with 26 cartes de visite and 4 tintypes; there are two unbound cdv's laid in that seem to belong with the collection but do not fit in. Nearly all of the cdv's have handwritten identifications of the sitters, and the handwriting appears to be the same. Several names appear multiple times, and include "Scruggs" "Terrell" "Smith" and "Stevens". The families clearly intermingled, and some of the names are "Mattie Wood Scruggs", "Mollie Wood Terrell", Ida and Wilbur W. Smith; "Elijah Jacob and Nannie N. Stevens Smith". The Terrell family was well established in Caroline County from at least the late 1700's. There is one particularly striking tintype image of T. W. Wood playing the violin. The album is in good shape, though some of the mounts are broken and have minor loss. Backmarks include Richmond and Charlottesville photographers.
