Truman, Missouri, 33rd President, America, 1800s, 19th Century, 1900, 20th Century, Biography, History, Government, Politics, DESCRIPTION: From the Collector's Notes: At a time when Presidential candidates are chosen as much for their celluloid appeal as for their politics, it's hard to believe that a chief executive like Harry S. Truman once presided in the Oval Office. Although today's political power brokers and media men wouldn't tolerate his plain-spoken honesty and unpretentious style for a minute, public admiration for Truman's leadership grows yearly. "Give 'em hell, Harry" ... that's what Americans expected of Truman and he never disappointed them. He spoke his mind guided by what he called "horse sense" and wrote as he spoke. His personal papers are full of the candor, insight and saltiness he was famous for, and the most entertaining of these papers are what comprises Off The Record. Including Truman's diary entries, memoranda and letters, Off The Record covers the period 1945 through 1971, with nearly two-thirds of its contents from the years of the Truman presidency. Throughout the volume, historian Robert Ferrell, who compiled and editen the eates, uts personal in estorent or interpretation. He lets Truman speak for himself. "Mr. Prima Donna, Brass Hat, Five Star MacArthur", the "sabotage press" the "Great White Prison": Truman wasted no words in expressing how he felt. He was feisty all right, but also sensitive and introspective. In particular Truman's papers from 1952, at the end of his term, remind us that the president is not merely a public figure and that the office is fraught with personal frustrations and disappointments… The … entries reveal a lot about Truman the family man, too. Although the crises that he confronted make today's seem pale, he writes of getting up at 3 a.m. "to see that Bess takes her medicine" for a head cold. Unbelievable? Maybe now it is, but that was Truman. Daily he displayed harsh judgments, intense loyalties and sweet sentiment with unrehearsed spontaneity and conviction. He was what is now a rare commodity: his own man. And his own words prove it best. Robert H. Ferrell, a professor at Indiana University, is a well-known historian and author. His outstanding organization of the presidential papers in Off The Record has done much to enhance understanding of Truman's administration. Distinctively bound in top-grade leather and embossed with 22kt. gold on the spine, this thoroughly enjoyable volume will prove to be a treasured edition in your Library of the Presidents collection. ********** This Easton Library of the Presidents edition reprints Ferrell's collection of the writings of the 33rd President, originally published in 1980 by Harper & Row. For convenience, I have numbered the volumes in the Library of the Presidents series based on the order of the Presidencies; numbers do not reflect the order in which the volumes were originally released. This copy is includes the Collector's Notes and the custom bookplate. CONDITION: Light shelf-wear to dark leather covers, mainly on the top and bottom edges. Cover gilt looks good (see photos). Some faint wear and mild foxing to the top and outside edge gilt; the interior appears clean and unmarked. Spine very slightly cocked. Collector's Notes are included, but the bookplate is absent.
