Jesus Sanchez Koa Photo Album, leather-bound, made circa 1995, Hilo, Hawaii. Jesus Sanchez was a master bookbinder who apprenticed at the Vatican on their rare books section and became known worldwide for his work on saving rare books and making books by hand. He moved to Hilo, Hawaii, and began hand-constructing books using archival-grade paper covered in koa wood with leather binding. This photo album, made in 1995, is 13" x 11", 40 pages. Each page has a spacer (seen in the photo as a thin slice of paper between two pages at the binding) to allow room for photographs. The paper shows dark spots of aging inside the front and back covers, also visible along the outside of the pages. The first few inside pages on each end also show the spotting with most of the 40 pages clear. There is a tiny pinhole on the back cover. Please look at all the pictures as this sale is non-refundable. Despite the signs of age, this large Sanchez photo album remains an exquisite piece of artistry. The koa wood, prized in Hawaii (of the mahogany family of woods) is a beautiful cut, dark brown with shades of curl in the grain. The wine-colored leather used to bind the album is in excellent condition.
