Description

[Photo Album]: New Jersey Girl Author: OLSEN, Lois Title: [Photo Album]: New Jersey Girl Publication: Perth Amboy, New Jersey: 1937-1940 Description: Softcover. Oblong octavo measuring 10" x 7". String-tied black leather over paper boards with "Photographs" stamped on the front board. Contains 89 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1.5" and 6" x 8.5" with captions. Very good with chips, tears, and tape repairs on the front board with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by New Jersey native Lois Olsen between 1937 and 1940. It begins with a handwritten forward from Olsen which reads, "these pictures were all taken during the years 1937 and 1938. Most of them were snapped in my favorite places in Perth Amboy, usually near the [word?]. They are snaps of myself and my friends and are both comic and serious pictures. These are a few memoirs of some of the swell times I have had." Underneath this it reads, "P.S. since I began this book, more years have passed than I stated above: hence, this book also covers, 1939 & 1940, with pictures at plays & at work." The album does just that, follows Olsen over three years spending time with her friends and visiting her favorite places in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Olsen and her friends are pictured lounging on the beach and later ice skating all while smiling and obviously aware of the camera. The photos are a mix of portraits and candid snaps of people laughing and enjoying each other's company and coastal landscapes. One photo shows a ferry at night and a plane at Newark Airport as well as one that is captioned, "freighters at anchor in Raritan Bay." Olsen tried her hand at more artistic shots of water, the docks, boats, and even a still life of a park bench covered in snow. Towards the end of the album there are group photos of several school activites Olsen was involved with including the Triangle Club, the N.J. Club, and varsity cheerleading. An interesting collection of photographs of a young woman and her friends in the late 1930s.
