String-tied red leather over paper boards with a flower illustrations and stamped decorations measuring 15" x 11.5". Assembled within the album are 64 black and white photographs measuring 4" x 5" to 10.5" x 7.5". Very good plus with some wear on the album edges and short tears. A collection of 64 photographs from the Alaskan territory in the late 1940s, less than a decade after completion of the Alaskan highway. Present are images of white Americans and military men, along with native Alaskans in traditional clothing posing in the snow with sled dogs and various snow equipment including a snowcat. Most of the photographs are full page images showing life in the Alaskan wilderness complete with close ups of native embroidery, the arctic landscape, and strange ways of bundling up entirely from the cold, seen here with a man dressed in an unusual face mask and full winter gear. Between 1930 and 1950 air travel had become increasingly important to the citizens of the territory; at least five pictures show pilots and engineers working on planes parked on a snowy run way.
