Description

[Photo Album]: The Trail of the Overland 4. March and April 1918 Title: [Photo Album]: The Trail of the Overland 4. March and April 1918 Description: Softcover. Oblong large quarto. 15" x 11". Cord-tied flexible leather wrappers. Title in gilt on front wrap. Some chipping and wear on the wrappers, splitting at the joints of the front wrap, externally about very good, internally near fine. Printed caption sheet affixed inside front wrap identifying and describing each image, each image (but for 5) is numbered in ink by hand to coincide with the caption sheet. The album contains 83 gelatin silver photographs, between one to three images per page. Most of the images are larger formats, with 41 of them - nearly half - being 12" x 4" panoramas. Terrific images of an excursion throughout the American Southwest consisting of four Willys-Overland automobiles and their drivers and passengers, clearly sponsored by the automobile company (as evidenced by a large "Overland" banner displayed in several images at the various camps they set up. There are many images of the cars on the road, with additional support vehicles, mostly trucks, as well as of overnight campsites, and additional images of the locations they visited. The expedition started at Lookout Mountain in Colorado, where they visited Buffalo Bill's grave, through Colorado Springs (Garden of the Gods, the Antler's Hotel), onward over the mud and snow of Ratoon Pass to New Mexico (Springer, Glorietta, Las Vegas, San Jose, Indian village of San Domingo, Hell Canyon). These are followed by camping scenes in the desert at "Camp Sand", identifying and featuring some of the participants: John the Cook, DeFrenes the photographer, George Brown, McCulla, Mr. Jackson, Diamond Dick Carhart, and others. From there they headed to Los Angeles, stopping in the small towns of Quemada, Springerville, St. Johns, Arizona, the Petrified Forest, the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, Needles, and on to California with lunch in the Mohave Desert, stops at Barstow, Cajon Pass, San Bernardino, and finally to Pasadena to the home of Mr. Willys, and finally on to Santa Monica for a dip in the Pacific. Wonderful images of a good-natured overland (and Overland) tour of the Southwest.
