C Photograph Album of a Trip to England Author: COYLE, Rev. Leonidas E. Title: Photograph Album of a Trip to England Description: Softcover. Oblong folio. Leather over flexible boards with blank black paper leaves. An album with 419 mounted photographs, 57 unmounted photographs, and one drawing. Many different sizes and processes, mostly gelatin-silver prints with a few cyanotypes. Photographs are mostly near fine, a few have creases or small damage, some are a bit oxidized, overall very good; the boards are near fine. The unmounted photographs are mostly captioned on the verso, perhaps the mounted ones are as well. Undated but circa 1890-1895. Perhaps slightly more than a dozen of the images are cabinet card portraits or commercial images, the rest are originals. Several of the unmounted images have the stamped back mark of Rev. Leonidas E. Coyle of Bridgeton, New Jersey, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church (also laid in is an interesting stamped label from a grocery and dry-goods store, presumably where the album was purchased). Most of the images are from a journey to England. The album begins with shipboard photos, but the major subject in England is churches and church ruins (Lincoln, Chester, Tintern Abbey, and many others), occasionally leavened by a small child or stodgy-looking clerical gentleman. The quality of the photographs are generally quite accomplished. Perhaps the last quarter of the album consists of portraits of young children with hoops, tennis gear, reading, canoeing, throwing a ball, with false mustaches, dressed as a soldier, with dogs and cats. Many seem quite pensive. Perhaps because of the fidgety nature of children, the childhood photographs seem of a lower artistic quality, but many are still quite charming.
