Full original leather, gilt stamped “Carver’s Travels” and lines between compartments on spine. Measures about 6 ¾” x 4.25”. Formerly Owned by John Cheever (1785-1841), Manchester, Massachusetts This copy with signature and town written “John Cheever, Jr., Manchester” at top right corner of dedication page and on rear free endpaper (dated 1815). He was the son of John Cheever, Sr. who was a soldier who fought at Crown Point and Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary War. John, Jr. was a selectman and representative in the Massachusetts legislature from Manchester. Condition: Front cover nearly detached, corners bumped. Corners and edges worn through in spots. Heavily foxed on pages 60-73. Some scattered light foxing throughout, however most pages are just mildly age-toned. Pages 20-32 are detached at bottom and protrude at fore edge, front free endpaper and any flyleaves (bank pages) missing, text block complete. Former owner stamped name and address (E. S. Follett of Manchester, Mass.)at top of tile page. Please see photos for further details. Carver penetrated the interior of North America describing insights into the geography, flora, fauna, and Indian customs. He explored the Northwest, Green Bay, Up the Mississippi River, Northern Minnesota, and back. He traveled for 2 years and 5 months, covering 7,000 miles. The first part of the book covers his journal and his travels and the second part covers the indigenous people he met, their manners, customs, religion, language, methods of war, hunting, prisoners, etc.
