Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966) was a novelist, travel writer and journalist, with his most well-known works including 'A Handful of Dust', 'Brideshead Revisited' and the trilogy 'Sword of Honour'. Waugh was one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. With truly stunning hand painted illuminations to the borders, with illustrations including of an anthropomorphic fox and bird, peacocks and flowers. These illuminations often have inset photographs from the nineteenth century. Containing two photographs only: one of an aristocratic or possibly royal woman wearing eighteenth or early nineteenth century clothing, one of three siblings taken in Germany also depicting young aristocrats. CONDITION In a full crushed morocco binding. Externally generally smart; a little bumped to the head and tail of the spine resulting in a touch of loss. Raised bands are a little rubbed. A plaque of some description has been removed from the front board, leaving small perforations. Internally, binding is strained and occasionally exposed. Pages are a little offset on occasion from the hand illustrated borders. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.
